Danika Mason’s NRL star boyfriend Liam Knight shocked fans with his bleached blonde hairstyle last weekend – but rather than being a fashion statement, the big change was actually punishment for breaking the rules of the team.

The Canterbury Bulldogs turned around their recent poor form by thrashing a hapless Gold Coast 32-0 at Belmore on Saturday, with the home side looking dominant in all areas.

One side change that fans couldn’t help but notice was Knight’s bold new hair color.

It turned out that the reason behind the drastic change was that he was punished for a minor infraction of team rules, according to Nine.

Knight is currently in a relationship with Nine Sports presenter Danika Mason, who sensationally called off her wedding to personal trainer Todd Liubinskas last year.

As Daily Mail Australia revealed in February, the sports presenter, 33, was seen cuddling with the Bulldogs prop, 29, at The Butler restaurant in Sydney’s exclusive Potts Point.

They began the evening sitting across from each other, before Knight walked over to Mason’s side of the table and they snuggled up in full view of onlookers.

‘Her behavior was that of a relaxed woman enjoying a pre-season fling with a younger specimen; “His was a deer in the headlights,” said one onlooker.

Mason would marry Liubinskas, 40, on October 27 of last year.

But she called off the wedding just weeks before the ceremony was due to take place at Greystone Estate in New South Wales’ Hunter Valley.

The exact reason for the couple’s separation is unclear and has become the subject of much speculation among football experts and the media.

It is unknown how long Mason, who presents the Sunday Footy Show, has been romantically involved with Knight.

Knight, who hosts a podcast called Stuk in the Middle with fellow NRL star Toby Rudolf, signed with the Bulldogs last year.

He previously played for the South Sydney Rabbitohs, Manly Sea Eagles and Canberra Raiders.

Knight, who describes himself as a “business investor”, is a recovering alcoholic and revealed last year that he attended AA meetings twice a week.

He turned to prescription medication and bottle feeding after a season-ending injury in 2022 and eventually sought help from Rabbitohs coach Jason Demetriou.

Together with South Sydney chief executive Blake Solly, Demetriou arranged for Knight to be admitted to a rehabilitation center for alcohol, drug and gambling addictions.

Knight spent 28 days at Foundation House in Lilyfield, in Sydney’s inner west.

“I still attend AA meetings twice a week,” he said last year.

“I stand up and say, ‘I’m Liam, I’m an alcoholic.’ People can judge me however they want. It doesn’t faze me.

Knight said he was not worried about being recognized at the facility, nor did he have any qualms about revealing the extent of his addiction problems.

Her main concern was sharing her story in the hope that it can help those suffering from mental health and reassure them that “help is available” for those who need it.
