A Melbourne mother was left shocked after she noticed “10ft high” flames appearing over her backyard fence while she was preparing family dinner in the kitchen.

Vonnie M was filming herself making lasagna for a TikTok video when flames could be seen appearing framed in the window behind her.

He then paused his cooking clip to venture into the backyard and investigate, where he discovered the neighbors had set fire to an unwanted couch.

The mother pointed out that the flames were very close to a wooden fence and right under a large tree.

“Look at this fire that’s happening with the people who live behind us,” he said in the video.

‘That huge tree is right there, I think it’s a bit dangerous.

“It seems like they think they have everything under control.

“I have the craziest neighbors.”

In a later video, Vonnie M revealed that they had learned that neighbors were burning the couch because no one would buy it on the Facebook marketplace and the city wouldn’t pick it up.

A spokesperson for Banyule City Council, the local government area in Melbourne’s northeast where the incident occurred, told Yahoo News they are investigating the matter.

While backyard fire laws vary between councils, permits can only be issued to burn green waste such as garden clippings in this area.

Unauthorized burning in yards can result in fines of up to $400.
