Extreme heat in northwest and central Australia will cause temperatures to rise above 40°C

Extreme heat will continue to ravage large areas of Australia as cold, wet fronts drench the other side of the country.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology, severe thunderstorms and a barrage of rain will hit the entire east coast, stretching from Victoria to New South Wales, Queensland and as far north as Australia.

Senior meteorologist Jonathan How said the storms are being driven by a surface trough.dragging a lot of tropical humidity from the north and towards the east of the country”.

This will cause heavy downpours in northern New South Wales and Queensland, while storms will hit the north of the country.

While rain will cool Sydney to the mid-20s in the coming days, many other capitals will see temperatures rise into the 30s in the coming days.

Northern New South Wales and southern Queensland are on high alert for possible flash flooding and severe thunderstorms, and motorists are advised to proceed with caution and not drive through flooded areas.

Strong winds could threaten to down power lines and trees, causing localized power outages in country Victoria and northeastern New South Wales.

On the other side of the country, a cold front is passing through parts of southern Western Australia.

Sandwiched between the cold front and the trough is a high pressure system over South Australia.

Victoria and Tasmania will also be subject to a high pressure system, which will reduce some of the humidity, leading to drier air and also clearer skies.

“We’ve seen some pretty significant wet weather… it slowed down the warming trend in Australia a little bit with all this rain and storm activity,” said Sky News Weather meteorologist Rob Sharpe.

“This month is more about rain and storms.”
