A female cyclist is dead after being hit by a Mercedes in an alleged attack and running in downtown Melbourne.

The cyclist died on the scene while the driver ran away. The age and identity of the woman have not yet been revealed.

Passers-by who walk on Chapel Street, near Grover Street, one of the busiest roads in the city, watched in horror as the tragedy unfolded.

Police said the driver also hit two parked cars before leaving the vehicle and fleeing.

Store worker Tony Christakakis told the Herald Sun that the scene had left him "stupefied."

"I'm stunned, astonished, angry that someone can leave someone." he said.

A witness performed CPR on the woman until the ambulance workers arrived.

The witnesses took Twitter to warn others about the incident.

"A tragic accident happened this morning with several cars smashed everywhere and the blue tarps are off," said one person.

"The trams and buses have stopped and all the traffic of cars, pedestrians and bicycles is being diverted to avoid the area, it's quite sad".

Traffic has closed along Chapel Street between Ellis Street and Malvern Road. Deviations are in place.

Trams and buses have also been affected by the accident, as Yarra Trams asks travelers to consider alternative forms of transport.

The police urge everyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1800 333 000.
