Melbourne restaurant owner doubles down after staff refused to serve Russell Crowe and his girlfriend Britney Theriot for wearing their tennis gear: ‘We treat everyone the same’
A Melbourne restaurant owner has doubled down after Russell Crowe and his partner Britney Theriot were turned away for overly casual attire.
Kristian Klein, owner of Japanese fusion restaurant Mr Miyagi in Chapel St, supported his staff’s decision, citing the couple’s “slobby gym gear” as why they were not served.
Of course, what accounts for “slobby gym clothes” is up to opinion, since Crowe was actually wearing a Ralph Lauren polo shirt he bought earlier that day and Theriot was wearing her tennis skirt.
The pair have just played a game before going out for dinner.
“We treat everyone the same. It doesn’t matter who you are or whether you are Russell Crowe. We have a dress code that we apply at every level,” Mr Klein said The Herald Sun on Friday.

So whoever it is, it’s still the same. We’re consistent about it and I don’t feel it’s unreasonable.’
Mr Klein says the hip eatery routinely rejects anyone wearing beachwear and casual wear, including yoga pants, tank tops and flip flops.
“We’re not trying to teach people how to dress. But I personally know that when I’m in my thongs and my boardies, I’m not going to try to go to a nice restaurant because I wouldn’t be dressed appropriately,” he said.
The pair went to court on Friday but were ruled out when they tried to enter Japanese fusion restaurant Mr Miyagi for post-match lunch.

Crowe’s manager Grant Vandenberg told Daily Mail Australia they were turned away while trying to ‘get a quick bite to eat’.
“He (Russell) went there with a brand new Ralph Lauren polo after just playing a game of tennis and got rejected,” Mr. Vandenberg said.
Crowe and Theriot then went to lunch at another nearby restaurant.
After the meeting, both he and the restaurant have been put in touch to smooth things over.
“We treat everyone the same. It doesn’t matter who you are or whether you are Russell Crowe. We have a dress code that we apply at every level,” Mr Klein said
According to Mr. Miyagi’s dress code, the establishment has a “smart casual dress code” that does not allow workwear, sportswear, tank tops and thongs.
The owner of Miyagi, Kristian Klein, told us that The Sydney Morning Herald an employee did not recognize Crowe on Friday and they would like him back.
Crowe and Theriot have been together since 2020 and have been photographed playing tennis together on more than one occasion.
The couple met on the film set for Broken City in 2013 and were confirmed to be together after being caught being affectionate with each other on a tennis court in November 2020.
Crowe was previously married to Danielle Spencer from 2003 to 2012, with whom he shares two sons, Charles and Tennyson.
