Violent scenes broke out between members of an anti-trans demonstration and counter-protesters in Melbourne’s CBD.

About 100 people turned out for the #WomenWillSpeak rally, organized by the Women’s Action Group, before members began clashing with pro-transgender activists on Spring Street around 10 p.m.

Scenes began to escalate quickly as pro-trans supporters with megaphones tried to push through a police line.

At least two protesters were tackled to the ground by officers before pepper spray was deployed.

In recordings recorded by Herald Sunhorrified diners had front-row seats to a heated brawl outside The Cricketer’s Bar at the Hotel Windsor between a woman’s right-wing supporter, dressed in all black and wearing sunglasses, and a group of protesters.

The man, who had allegedly opposed transgender supporters, is seen pushing the activists before grabbing one by the throat and slamming them against the wall.

‘F****ng kill yourself, f****ng kill yourself,’ one protester is heard screaming.

Several objects such as a camera tripod, an umbrella and cardboard signs were used as makeshift weapons.

Video footage from close to parliament showed police trying to quell protesters with pepper spray in wild scenes.

Melbourne Activist Legal Support action group had legal observers present at the site.

A Victoria Police spokesman told Daily Mail Australia it was unhappy with the violence that erupted during the weekend rally.

“Victoria Police has been disappointed by the behavior of many who took part in a demonstration in the city today,” a police spokesman said.

“Our members were confronted by hostile members of the crowd who behaved violently towards the police.

“We have a long history of supporting peaceful protests, but we will not tolerate infamy and illegal behavior,” they added.

The statement said Victoria Police had a ‘significant presence’ prepared for the estimated 100-person protest.

It confirmed that OC Spray was deployed when members of the group tried to break the police line.

“Two women in their 20s were arrested at the scene and are expected to be charged on summons,” the spokesman added.

“As is standard procedure, available footage will be reviewed to identify additional offences.”

Anyone who witnessed illegal behaviour, has footage or other information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a report online at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au
