New dedicated parking areas for seniors have caused confusion among Australian motorists due to unclear signage.
Designated spaces at Harpley Town Centre in Wyndham Vale, Melbourne, are marked with universally recognised male and female icons, leaving many locals wondering how they represent the over-60s.
Some suggested that a symbol such as a cane would be more appropriate, while others said writing “seniors only” on parking spaces would also have been effective.
Many shoppers thought the sign represented parking spots for families or carpoolers.
“I have my partner with me and my baby in the back, so I assumed if there were two people in there, then we were in that category,” one driver said. 7NEWS.
Another driver said he saw the icon with two people on the asphalt and thought he could park there because he had two people in his car.
A third assumed the sign represented a parking space for a childless couple..
Ian Mackenzie, Harpley town centre manager, said the icons were meant to show someone who was older but not sick.
“Not all older people have canes and some people might be offended,” Mackenzie said.
Additional signage is being added to address confusion.
