Weaving in and out of traffic on Smith and Johnston Street in Collingwood, the large deer was lucky not to be hit by passing cars when walkers stopped to snap photos of the runaway mammal on Saturday.

Shortly after 10 a.m., Wildlife Victoria confirmed that they had received a number of calls related to the animal and were tracking its movements.

On the same day, Victoria registered five new cases of coronavirus, including two ‘unlinked’ mysterious infections from the same household.

Saturday’s new cases mean the outbreak in the state has risen to 69 local infections.

There was also one case registered in hotel quarantine, meaning Victoria is juggling 78 active infections in total as health officials race to find the source of the new Indian ‘Delta’ variant.

Three of the five new cases are close contacts with existing cases.
