Shocking CCTV footage has emerged of the moment a man was hit and seriously injured by his own car after trying to stop it being stolen.

The man was parked outside restaurants and bars on Melbourne’s busy Hardware Lane at around 3pm on Thursday when he was robbed and left fighting for his life in hospital.

The footage showed a man in a blue jacket riding a scooter and inspecting the red Ford 4WD.

The man in the blue jacket folded his scooter and placed it in the car before jumping into the driver’s seat.

The victim and a woman, who were packing boxes onto a cart in front of the car, noticed the man and tried to stop him from driving away.

But the thief continued driving while the victim clung tightly to the front of the vehicle.

Shocked bystanders were seen rushing to help the victim, but the car continued forward with the victim being dragged from the front.

The man was rushed to Royal Melbourne Hospital where he remained in a critical condition on Thursday night.
