Melania Trump has become famous for her fashion sense, often opting for European designers such as Christian Dior, which she wore to former President Jimmy Carter's state funeral

Melania Trump has become famous for her understated fashion sense, often opting for European designers such as Christian Dior, Valentino and Dolce & Gabbana.

To create her elegant ensembles, the First Lady works directly with Hervé Pierre Braillard, the former creative director of Carolina Herrera, but he often does not have pieces custom made.

Pierre revealed himself The New York Times in 2017, much of what Melania wears is straight off the rack.

When the former model wears American designers, she digs through her own closet for archive pieces from luxury fashion houses, or Pierre purchases the pieces directly for her.

Pierre, who previously worked for Oscar de la Renta, Vera Wang and Christian Dior, goes shopping without saying for whom he makes garments.

‘I’m going to Bergdorf, I’m going to Saks. Michael Kors, Dior,” revealed the designer, who also worked at Balmain. “What’s challenging is that I can’t say what it’s for.”

Instead, Pierre should ask if he’s been worn on the red carpet recently because he doesn’t want the 54-year-old to end up on a ‘Who Wore It Better List’.

I don’t really do that, for the good reason that the fashion industry isn’t very welcoming (to Trump). That’s no secret,” Pierre said. WWD in November 2024.

Pierre told Women’s Wear Daily that 95 percent of what he buys for her is purchased in freestanding stores, as opposed to the designer’s showrooms.

He revealed that once, while shopping at a designer store on Madison Avenue in Manhattan, he was told he “wasn’t welcome here.”

However, he did not want to reveal the name of the store because he did not want to give it “free publicity.”

‘Some are very open-minded and could do something special. But a lot of people don’t,” the celebrity stylist continued.

Pierre explained that when he asked an American brand to make a dress or brand for Melania, he was told they couldn’t do it, even if it was simply to make an ensemble in a different color.

The French-born stylist, based in New York City, ultimately designed the dress she wore to the 2017 inaugural balls, as well as the dress she wore in 2025.

While fashion fans waited patiently to find out which designer Melania would choose after many of the major designers shunned her during her husband’s first presidency, she opted for her stylist instead.

Pierre crafted an elegant strapless white silk crepe dress with two black straps across the chest.

Melania paired the dress with a diamond brooch made by Harry Winston in 1955, worn as a choker, and white Manolo Blahnik pumps with pointed toes.

In 2017, Ralph Lauren created a powder blue double-faced cashmere dress and coat for the inaugural parade before going on to design many outfits for the Biden family.

Pierre has been paid handsomely for his styling services.

In 2023, government documents showed that the pro-Trump Save America PAC paid Pierre more than $200,000 for his services.

The PAC made the payments in monthly increments of $18,000 and labeled them “strategic advice.”

During the swearing-in ceremony, Melania chose to choose American designers.

Adam lives between New York City and the Berkshires, while Eric lives in Miami and both created custom pieces for her inauguration fashion statement.

Many designers face resistance from their customers, both in person and on social media.

Adam shared a statement about the jacket Instagramwriting, “The tradition of the presidential inauguration embodies the beauty of American democracy and today we had the honor of dressing our first lady, Mrs. Melania Trump.”

The Buffalo, New York-born fashion designer continued, “Mrs. Trump’s outfit was made by some of America’s finest artisans and I am very proud to be able to showcase such work to the world.”

Pierre commented: ‘A masterpiece Adam… it’s SO chic… and the making… everything is FLAWLESS CONGRATULATIONS.’

Many praised the look, calling it ‘pure class’ and ‘breathtaking’, although some took issue with the American designer dressing her.

“I wonder how much your soul cost,” one commenter wrote.

Another blow back: ‘I don’t know who those naysayers are, but they lack character and taste.’
