Meghan Markle was ‘taken aback’ by Harry’s less ‘royal’ life than William, Royal author Robert Jobson

Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, reportedly took issue with Prince Harry’s position within the royal family when their relationship began in 2016. According to royal author Robert Jobson, Meghan was shocked by the treatment Harry received compared to his brother, Prince William.

In his writingsJobson reveals that during Meghan’s first visits to London, she quickly noticed the stark difference in how the two siblings were perceived and treated within the royal hierarchy. This perception became particularly apparent during an informal meeting at the London apartment of Prince William and Catherine, the Prince and Princess of Wales.

“When they went for drinks at William and Kate’s plush apartment, she was reportedly ‘shocked’ by the disparity between the siblings,” Jobson wrote. While Meghan understood William’s prominent position as heir to the throne, she believed that Harry, being also a royal prince, should have received more material help. The difference in status between them within the family hierarchy did not sit well with her.

Jobson elaborated further, stating:“She was upset by the disparity.” This sentiment reflected Harry’s own feelings about his position within the Royal Family, as he was also aware of the differences in their living conditions.

Harry himself addressed this issue in his memory Replacementpublished in 2023, where he reflects on the experience of taking Meghan to his residence at Nottingham Cottage in Kensington Palace. The cottage’s modest size and simplicity made Harry feel embarrassed, particularly in comparison to the grandeur normally associated with royal residences.

“I was thrilled to welcome Meg into my home, but also felt embarrassed. Nott Cott was not a palace,” Harry wrote, candidly expressing his feelings about the situation. This admission highlights the discomfort both Meghan and Harry felt about their perceived position within the royal institution, even as they prepared for their wedding.

These insights provide insight into the early days of Meghan and Harry’s relationship and the challenges they faced as they navigated the complex dynamics of the Royal Family. The disparity between the siblings and perceived lack of material wealth became a point of contention, setting the stage for the couple’s ultimate decision to step back from their royal duties.
