While lying in bed, Kessler recommends taking a few deep breaths and then visualizing a house that looks familiar, but not your own.

She said: ‘I use my grandmother’s old house. Visualize yourself walking slowly towards the house, noticing all the details outside, approaching the door and opening it.

‘(Then) I walked in, looked at the layout and then slowly walked through each room and noticed things in as much detail as possible.

‘Walk through each room and look at the art, furniture and layout.

“There’s something about this that distracts your thinking, keeps your mind busy enough to let you sleep.”

Kessler, who has worked in this field for five years, says the practice is so effective that it doesn’t take long to fall asleep.

He added: “I have literally never climbed the stairs of his house.”

The hack could be good news for the more than 70 million Americans who have trouble sleeping, according to the NIH.

Viewers eager to put it to the test commented on the clip and liked it more than 150,000 times.
