McDonald's restaurants across the country are offering Pokémon as part of the 'Dragon Discovery' promotion

Fast food fans can now buy ‘nostalgic’ Happy Meal toys at McDonald’s.

The restaurant empire brought back its favorite Happy Meal toys to participating locations nationwide on January 21 for a limited time.

The promotion, which McDonald’s ‘Dragon discovery,” gives customers the chance to score a Pokémon card pack with their meals.

“Catch me at McDonald’s tomorrow and order a happy meal for the Pokémon cards,” an X user tweeted.

Each meal comes with a pack of four cards, a double-sided poster and stickers.

The fast food chain has 15 cards in the collection this year with characters such as Eevee, Hatenna and Jigglypuff.

Customers’ ‘Dragon Discovery’ Happy Meal comes in one of four Pokémon-themed boxes, featuring Charizard, Dragonite & Pikachu, Rayquaza and Roaring Moon.

The cards are only available until February 24 and caused a social media frenzy on X.

Several X users were happy to hear about the return of the Pokémon cards.

‘The second day I go to McDonald’s with my boys for the new Pokemon Happy Meal. Sorry, not sorry,” an X user tweeted.

“Bruhhhh those are so sick, I really hope I can get my hands on some,” another X user said wrote.

“And it’s perfect to end it in February because it’s their 29th anniversary of Pokemon,” one fan pointed out on X.

Others were more interested in thinking about the scalpers who only buy the cards and not the Happy Meals.

‘Finally something for my savings points. Unless the scalpers get them first. Somehow,” an X user wrote.

“I already see scalpers in the drive-thru, ‘Uhhhhh, I’ll have 100 happy meals, all chicken nuggets with extra fries,'” another X user joked.

“I can’t wait for scalpers to buy over 100 happy meals just so they can have the cards and sell them at high prices,” one fan tweeted.

“You can get the older sets for less than five dollars. This will be no different,” said one fan responded.

The Pokémon cards became an annual toy at McDonald’s in 2011 and collections have been released almost every year since.

All cards usually feature exclusive McDonald’s numbering, and the holo cards (gloss finish cards) have confetti-patterned holofoil used only for the restaurant chain’s promotions.

From 2011 to 2019, McDonald’s included 12 Pokémon cards in its annual collections in the US.

The fast food empire has updated its collection with 25 cards in 2021.

The company subsequently reduced the card collections to 15 for the 2022 and 2023 collections.

McDonald’s did not hold the annual promotion at its US locations in 2013, 2020 and 2024.

However, the fast food chain made up for this by launching it in New Zealand and France last year and launching in Austria later this month.

In addition to the Pokémon promotion, McDonald’s is hosting its $5 Meal Deal and Buy One, Add One for $1 offers on its all-new McValue platform.

McDonald’s franchisees across the country are also offering special deals on fan favorite products, according to the company’s press release.

“I admit, it’s sometimes hard to choose between my favorites, but now you don’t have to,” said John Cena, McDonald’s Value Champion.

The fast food chain ended its third quarter on September 30, 2024 with revenue of $6.87 billion.

Experts at Forbes have forecast that McDonald’s total sales for fiscal year 2024 will reach $26.2 billion.

Fiscal 2024 results will be announced in the upcoming earnings report, expected to be released on February 10.
