House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy defended renting a room from GOP pollster Frank Luntz, who labeled Tucker Carlson a secret liberal on his show.

‘I didn’t know how controversial this was. Frank has been a friend of mine for over 30 years, ”McCarthy said on Fox & Friends on Tuesday when asked about his living situation.

The California Republican pointed out that he met Luntz alongside GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich when they were working on the ‘Contract with American’ in the 1990s.

McCarthy suggested that thanks to the Democrats running the house and tougher COVID rules, we were forced from his office couch, where he usually sleeps, to a Luntz apartment in downtown DC’s Penn Quarter neighborhood.

A spokesman for the 56-year-old California representative told Carlson, “Because of the pandemic, McCarthy rented a room in Washington at a fair market price from Frank.”

According to online ownership records, Luntz is a registered owner of four apartments in the building.

It is unclear which of the apartments McCarthy lives in.

Luntz, 59, runs a successful Republican opinion and communications company, but stated in January that he could no longer call himself a Republican.

His stance has infuriated Tucker Carlson, with the Fox News host blaming Luntz for driving a wedge between Republican voters and their leaders.

On Friday, Carlson said senior Republicans were no longer affiliated with their supporters, in part because they listened to “conventional liberals” like Luntz, who he accused of serving “left-wing businesses.”

Monday night, Carlson revealed that McCarthy lived with Luntz.

Some members of Congress rent or buy real estate in Washington, DC, for when the body is in session, while others – as McCarthy did before – sleep on their office benches.

Most avoid staying with friends because of concerns about ethical rules prohibiting the acceptance of gifts.

Carlson said Luntz, who is not a registered lobbyist, is “lobbying on behalf of the world’s left-most companies,” citing Google, Nike and Delta Airlines.

He said he was “in fact a Democrat.”

He also advises the leadership of the Republican Party.

In real life, his views are nothing like the views of real Republican voters.

So the question is, how did someone like this get into the Republican Party? Why do they listen to someone like Frank Luntz instead of their own constituents? ‘

Carlson said Luntz works for companies that oppose the Republican Party.

Carlson said the Republican leaders’ association with Luntz is due in part to his “particularly close relationship” with McCarthy, who Luntz described as “a personal friend.”

So Luntz is the personal friend of the top Republican in the House.

Apparently we didn’t know half of it.

They’re not just personal friends, they’re roommates. Kevin McCarthy lives in Frank Luntz’s apartment in downtown Washington DC. ‘

McCarthy, who married his high school sweetheart Judy, still lives in the first house they bought together in Bakersfield, California.

In the house they raised their two children, Connor and Meghan.

McCarthy’s settlement in Washington seems unusual, but his spokesman said he paid the going rate to avoid charges for conflicts of interest.

The market interest rate is said to be about $ 5,000 per month.

Carlson added, “The best Republican in the House lives with a Google lobbyist? Come on.

Even by the filthy and corrupt norms of Washington politics, that didn’t seem possible. It even sounded like a joke. ‘

He said McCarthy’s spokesman had laughed at the suggestion that he lived with Luntz – before calling back to confirm it was true.

Carlson turned to the veteran GOP pollster after Axios quoted him last week, “Republicans are more pro-immigrant than elites realize.”

Luntz said he led focus groups of potential voters and that he got the impression that the gap between Democrats and Republicans on hot-button issues like immigration and border security is not as wide as thought.

Carlson ridiculed Luntz on Friday for suggesting that Republicans support granting Dreamers permanent legal status, or undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as young children.

The Fox News host attacked Luntz for suggesting that “Republican voters are in fact out to grant amnesty to as many foreigners as possible.”

Carlson said sarcastically, “They demand it right away!”

He then played a clip of an interview with Luntz in which the pollster says Trump supporters are in favor of providing the Dreamers with a ‘path to citizenship’.

Carlson accused Luntz of taking the same stance on immigration as Google’s, and that his views were applauded by “open-border activists.”

Luntz is ‘toadying for big corporations’ like Purdue Pharma, the maker of the highly addictive pain reliever OxyContin, which has been blamed for helping fuel the opioid epidemic.

Last year, Luntz revealed that Biden “ came up to me and gave me the biggest hug ” after learning that the pollster suffered a stroke while leading a focus group in New Hampshire last January.

“Joe Biden is a nice man,” Luntz told MSNBC in October.

‘He’s a decent man. He has been through hell himself several times. ‘

Luntz responded to Friday’s portion of Carlson’s show by tweeting, “That explains all the angry, misspelled messages in my inbox tonight.”
