According to Leggett Town Commissioner Teresa Summerlin, Jackie Skelton, 66, was an oncology nurse at Vidant Edgecombe Hospital and did not show up for work on Thursday.
His co-workers contacted the sheriff's office to request a social assistance check, which led to the discovery of the bodies on their property.
Teresa Summerlin told WNCN that the Skeltons were last seen alive on Wednesday night when they went out to dinner with another couple.
"It's unimaginable to what they got home last night, that's what makes me sick to the core, how they must have felt," Summerlin told WRAL-TV. "It made me sick and they were the epitome of good people, they were incredibly good people".
