BSP President Mayawati today demanded a high-level inquiry into the death of gangster and politician Mukhtar Ansari, saying the truth of the matter must come out to the public.
Ansari, 63, died of cardiac arrest at a hospital in Banda district of Uttar Pradesh on Thursday.
In a post on “
Bhim Army founder and Aazad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) president Chandra Shekhar Aazad also demanded a CBI probe into Ansari’s death.
“The untimely death of former MLA Mukhtar Ansari is very sad. I pay my humble tribute. My condolences to his family and supporters, may nature give them the strength to bear this immense loss,” Aazad posted on X in Hindi .
“Earlier he had expressed fears that he would be killed. I demand the Allahabad High Court, Uttar Pradesh, for a CBI probe into his death,” the Dalit leader added.
Aazad’s party is in the fray for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Ansari, 63, was brought to Rani Durgavati Medical College in Banda from the district jail on Thursday evening in an “unconscious condition” and died in hospital after suffering cardiac arrest, director Suneel Kaushal said.
Ansari’s family claims he suffered slow poisoning in prison, an accusation denied by authorities.
Ansari was a five-time MLA from Mau Sadar. He had been behind bars in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab since 2005. More than sixty criminal cases were pending against him.
He was convicted in eight cases by different courts in Uttar Pradesh since September 2022 and was lodged in Banda Jail. His name was included in the list of 66 gangsters issued by the Uttar Pradesh police last year.
