It comes after Maya revealed how her career kept her from ‘going off the rails’ after her first love was shot when she was just 16.

She said, “When I was 16, I went through a lot. When my friend passed away, I took a fearless approach to things. I felt that life was very short.

“Of all that [has] happened in my life, that was a reality check on a large scale. At sixteen you think the world is a fairy tale and that took me out. It made me even more determined.

“If I hadn’t gone through those difficulties, my whole perception of life would have been different.

“I don’t let myself get over smaller things because I know what it’s like to feel real pain. I don’t stick around much. ‘

She added, “Statistically, I should have gone off the rails then, and it feels like my career saved that thing that happened because I had hope and there was something to look forward to.

“If you’re going through a trauma, if you don’t have something to look forward to, you can get stuck in a rut.”
