Maya Jama has announced a new career change: she will work with Idris Elba

Maya Jama has announced a new career move: she will be working with Idris Elba.

The Love Island presenter, 29, will work on the West End transfer of Bush Theatre’s Shifters with the actor, 51, and Little Simz.

The trio, which will produce the play, will be joined by Eleanor Lloyd Productions, Chuchu Nwagu Productions and Sonia Friedman Productions.

“I’m so excited to be part of Benedict Lombe’s beautiful play Shifters in the West End,” Maya said in a statement.

‘I fell in love with the play the moment I read it. I feel like I know these characters, I know their story, and it’s also really wonderful to be able to see yourself represented in art, that’s the most important part.’

She continued: ‘I really hope you fall in love with these characters and their journey as much as I did.’

Idris added: “This play is so beautifully written by Benedict Lombe and so beautifully performed by Heather Agyepong and Tosin Cole, we feel very, very privileged to be part of its transition to the West End.”

Little Simz said Shifters moved her to tears after watching the show, saying: “Tosin and Heather delivered Benedict’s words with such conviction and truth.

“Their performances were exceptional. I’m so glad it’s being revived in the West End as this is a very important story that needs to be told. Get your tickets now before it’s too late.”

A synopsis of the play reads: ‘As the clock ticks back until Des has to leave again, memories of their teenage years collide with their present and they are forced to wonder if fate has brought them back together for some reason.

‘Shifters is a wonderfully intoxicating and relatable reminder of the enduring power of memory and young love.’

The West End play Transfer of Shifters opens on 12 August at the Duke of York’s in London. Theatre and performances until October 12. Tickets, here.

Maya has become one of the most famous faces in the country since landing one of the biggest jobs in television as the presenter of Love Island.

The presenter has since landed other high-profile jobs including hosting The BRITs, Comic Relief, as well as becoming the face of Dolce & Gabanna and appearing on the cover of Vogue.

But after January’s spin-off, Love Island: All Stars, received its lowest ratings ever for a final, it’s unclear whether it will return next year.

PR expert Nick Ede told MailOnline: “Maya may have recently exited the final series of Love Island and split from her own love interest Stormzy, but she remains one of the UK’s biggest and brightest stars.”
