An Australian woman was shocked to discover a new ‘rule’ at petrol stations that targeted her and made her feel ‘uncomfortable’.
The Queensland driver was transferring funds to pay for fuel while her husband got out of the car to fill up.
The gas station attendant “barged in” and told him that passengers were not allowed to fill up the car, that it must be the driver.
“It’s been a rule for a while now, to try to stop people driving away,” the guard said, referring to people who fill up their cars and drive away without paying.
The woman was furious at the “made-up rule”, which cannot be enforced, and wrote on Reddit that she was probably profiled because she was not well dressed.

“I went to fill up the car with gas this morning and, like every time I get gas, my husband got out of the passenger side and went to fill up the car for me.
“We took our time, we talked a little. I was sitting in the driver’s seat with the door ajar, the fuel tank is on that side. The gas station was empty, we weren’t holding anyone,” she wrote in a message.
The couple tried to circumvent the “rule”, particularly because the woman was in her pajamas and did not want to get out of the car.
” What is this mess ? ” she says. “Surely that’s not a real rule?” I guess she saw us in my beat up old (car), (playing) trying to find money, so she assumed we were suspicious.
The woman argued the rule “made no sense.”
“I can get back in my driver’s seat and drive away a lot faster than my husband could run to the passenger side and jump in,” she said.
“This made me very uncomfortable and I would like to know if this is a real rule or if this old bidder is about to get an email to her supervisor to call her .”
A few gas station workers revealed in the comments that while it’s not an official law, companies are asking their staff to be vigilant around customers.
“Unfortunately, you looked shady,” one employee said. “That’s a hell of a job, she wasn’t right to discriminate against you, but I guess her penance must be working there.”
Another said: “I’m a former console operator and my old bosses used to come up with ‘rules’ like these all the time. »
“While this is one of the major corporate chains, this is in no way an official company policy. But this sounds like something an idiot supervisor would concoct and verbally instruct his staff to implement,” one man wrote.
Another worker also revealed other “rules” they force attendants to follow.
“This is becoming the norm now. If the weather is calm and you are using a less visible pump, you may also be asked to switch to another pump so that we can observe the process. We can’t tell who’s dodgy and who’s not by looking at you or your car, so everyone is treated as ‘dodgy,’ he said.
