Verstappen’s Red Bull team will now face a race against the clock to ensure his car is ready for qualifying, which takes place at 1 p.m.
Verstappen, who is four points ahead of Lewis Hamilton en route to Sunday’s race, suffered suspension damage in the accident.
After leaving his cockpit, Verstappen sat bent over on a concrete block as he wondered how big the blow could be his practice crash ahead of the campaign’s sixth round in Baku.
The Dutchman took his first win in Monaco on the last lap and will be happy to build on his momentum as he battles Mercedes.
Red Bull is now frantically working on the car, with the aim of getting Verstappen back on track
In the absence of Verstappen, Pierre Gasly’s AlphaTauri finished as the surprising pacemaker, finishing the running three-tenths of Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, with Hamilton in third.
However, the world champion took advantage of a mighty back drag from Perez’s Red Bull on the long trail to the finish, while his Mercedes team still seemed to struggle with the pace.
Indeed, Hamilton’s teammate Valtteri Bottas finished just 13th, 1.5 seconds off the pace.
Lewis Hamilton finished third in practice and will try to take advantage of Verstappen’s mistake
