‘I had 10 pints and three bottles of wine in one night’: Max George breaks down as he discusses his battle with alcohol abuse on Scared Of The Dark

Max George burst into tears as he outlined his battle with alcohol abuse.

In scenes that will appear on Wednesday night’s episode of Scared Of The Dark, the singer, 34, was comforted by Paul Gascoigne as he discussed his binge drinking and the loss of his bandmate Tom Parker.

According to The sunemotional Max revealed that he used alcohol to “adjust” to the spotlight and to ease his anxiety during his “lowest point ever.”

He was referring to an incident where he drank 10 pints and three bottles of wine in one night while celebrating his birthday.

The binge contained approximately 38 units of alcohol. The NHS recommends that men and women consume no more than 14 units per week.

Speaking of his drinking, he said, “I would always be p***ed before we performed. I had a hard time adjusting, so I drank to make myself feel like I wasn’t bothered.

“It’s kind of hard to differentiate between anxiety and depression sometimes, but mine was definitely more of the anxiety side that started when the guys hit number one with All Time Low.”

Referring to his birthday binge session, he confessed, “I was sick for a week. The doctor looked at my liver and said my liver count was quite low, I’m not messing with my liver. So I quit.’

He added that he was also inspired to quit drinking after learning of bandmate Tom’s stage four glioblastoma diagnosis.

Bursting into tears, he confessed to Paul, “This place has broken me up for talking about things I haven’t even told my own family about.”

In Scared Of The Dark, celebrities live in complete darkness for eight days while participating in challenges.

Max and Paul are joined by Chris Kamara, Nicola Adams, Scarlett Moffatt, Chris McCausland, Donna Preston and Chloe Burrows who live in darkness for 180 hours.

Any star who says “I’m afraid of the dark” can be released and leave the show, and the celebs have already struggled under the grueling circumstances.

Max previously revealed that sobriety has made life clearer and helped him pass his driving test, despite being “really bored on weekends.”

He said in March last year: “I haven’t had a drink in 18 months, everyone says, ‘I bet you feel better, don’t you?'”

‘No, I’m just really bored on the weekends! Just grim as usual through the week. It’s been good, it’s easier to keep fit… so yeah, everything is pretty clear now.’

The singer also credited his 18 months of sobriety with helping him pass his driving test after seven attempts.

Speaking of other benefits of quitting drinking, he said, ‘I passed my driving test, which is good, it only took me 32 years and seven exams! All my tests always came on Mondays, so I always felt terrible (after the weekend), but I passed on Thursday morning.’
