- Max Gawn has intervened in the Toby Greene saga
- Greene was given a one-game suspension for a controversial hit
- Gawn predicts drastic changes to pothole rules
Max Gawn believes football is set for a major rule change as the Melbourne captain intervened in Toby Greene’s controversial hit.
GWS Giants captain Greene received a one-match suspension for rough conduct after hitting Jordan Boyd with a mid-air punch during last weekend’s loss to Carlton.
Greene jumped to score but turned his body milliseconds before the collision. As a result, he made contact with Boyd’s head, the Carlton star backing away from the flight of the ball.
Body was not seriously affected by the incident and immediately stood up to take a free kick before playing the rest of the match.

GWS Giants captain Toby Greene handed a ban in a decision that divided football
However, Greene’s actions were rated as careless conduct by the match review panel, with medium impact and high contact.
The Giants are expected to challenge the suspension in court on Tuesday night, with Thursday’s mammoth game against the Brisbane Lions in mind.
But the incident opened a can of worms and Gawn admitted his Demons dressing room was “divided”.
‘This is the new rig of 2012… go for a brand and get someone. Every year there’s a new court decision where you think ‘wow, that’s no longer in play,'” he said on Triple M.
‘It feels like he’s going to find a brand and defend himself a little bit. It is better that you try to pamper yourself so as not to be so bent with your shoulder.
Greene hit Jordan Boyd with a high hit as Boyd was flying the ball.
Gawn believes this could be a pivotal moment for a controversial area of the rules.
Gawn added that he believes football is approaching a pivotal moment when it comes to hurdles.
“That’s a can of worms and I estimate that in 10 years it could be something that is a rule, returning to flight,” he said.
Toby left it with the guy returning with the flight.
Giants coach Adam Kingsley didn’t seem overly concerned about the incident immediately after the final siren, so he will surely be furious with the suspension of his inspirational leader.
“There will be nothing to it,” Kingsley said.
He is allowed to dispute the ball, right? Are you allowed to dance?
