“He was injured earlier this month while training,” a team statement read. “Further medical updates on Irving’s status will be provided when appropriate.”
The Mavericks’ season ended on June 17 with a Game 5 loss to the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. The schedule for the upcoming NBA season has not yet been released. Training camp typically begins in early October and the regular season a few weeks later in late October. The Mavericks did not clarify whether Irving is expected to return in time to start the regular season.
Irving, an eight-time All-Star and three-time All-NBA selection, helped lead the Mavericks alongside MVP runner-up Luka Dončić to their first Finals appearance since winning the 2011 NBA title. In his first full season in Dallas, Irving averaged 25.6 points, 5.2 assists, five rebounds and 1.3 steals in 58 regular-season games while shooting 49.7 percent from the field and 41.1 percent from 3-point range.
