The family of an Australian tourist who suffered a terrible illness during a bucket-list overseas trip is desperately fighting to bring her home.
After Maud O’Brian, 58, was diagnosed with cancer, she booked a three-week cruise from Queensland to Hawaii with her husband Paul.
A week into the cruise, she contracted the flu and was medically evacuated from the ship to Tahiti.
His condition deteriorated rapidly and he was diagnosed with “severe pneumonia.”
O’Brian’s daughter, Ashleigh Stothard, created a GoFundMe to cover her mother’s medical bills and flight home after insurers refused to cover her due to her pre-existing cancer.

She provided an update on what she described as an “incredibly challenging” time for her family, saying it has taken a toll on her.
“Mom was taken to the island’s main hospital in Papeete, where her health plummeted and we feared for her life,” he said.
“Despite the best efforts of medical staff, my mother’s condition was critical and all she wanted was to return to Australia.”
Mrs Obrien’s family requested quotes for an intensive care air ambulance flight back to Mackay, ranging from $185,000 to $500,000.
He was allowed to fly home a few days later, but things worsened while on board.
“My mother’s health condition was life-threatening and she almost did not survive the trip,” Mrs Stothard said.
“The situation was serious, but the medical team on board helped stabilize it.
“Mum is currently in Auckland, New Zealand, where she is receiving the care she urgently needs.”
After a difficult start, Ms O’Brian began to make progress at Middlemore Hospital, where her family say she is well cared for.
“The staff at Auckland Hospital have been fantastic,” Ms Stothard said. 7News.
“Not just mom, but also dad, making sure she has a place to sleep next to her; we want to thank you for your kindness and support.”
Ms O’Brian’s family faces significant medical expenses, including a hospital bill of approximately $60,000, as well as other expenses such as taxis, food and accommodation.
Ms O’Brian began to improve at New Zealand’s Middlemore Hospital, where her family says she is well cared for.
Magpies Sporting Club, where she and her partner work in Mackay, have appealed for anyone who can donate.
‘This unexpected situation has placed a significant emotional and financial burden on his family. With medical bills piling up and distance increasing the strain, they are turning to our community for support,” they wrote on Facebook.
‘Her deepest wish is to bring Maude back home, where she can receive the comfort and care she truly needs, surrounded by the love of her family and familiar surroundings. However, the costs associated with her treatment, ongoing care, and possible medical evacuation are overwhelming.
‘This is where your kindness and generosity can make a big difference. Every contribution, regardless of size, will go directly toward covering Maude’s medical expenses, travel arrangements, and any accommodations necessary for her recovery process.
So far the family has raised more than $16,000 and Mrs Stothard said everyone’s support and well wishes have brought them comfort.
“Having people behind you gives you faith in humanity and has definitely helped you,” he said.
‘Your continued support is crucial as we go through this difficult time. Your donations, prayers and well wishes have given us hope and comfort during Mom’s recovery.
‘Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your love, generosity and compassion.’
O’Brian’s family knows he has a long road ahead, but they are hopeful he can return home soon.
