According to the Italian newspaper Corriere dello SportDe Ligt will not return to the negotiating table after the difficult encounter with Juve officials.

The 22-year-old is under contract with the club until 2024 and Juve want to extend his contract until 2026.

De Ligt reportedly believes this figure is too high and is looking closer to £68 million.

There was also disagreement about wages. De Ligt is currently the highest paid player in the roster, with a salary of £7million with bonuses potentially reaching £10million.

The meeting could mark the end of De Ligt’s time in Italy after he signed for Juve from Ajax in 2019 on a five-year contract.

Should he get his wish to leave, he could reunite with Erik ten Hag at United after the two teamed up at Ajax. De Ligt was also linked with a move to Old Trafford before leaving the Netherlands for Italy three years ago.

The Dutch central defender recently praised Ten Hag’s talent as a manager. “He has a lot of qualities (to succeed). We’ll have to wait and see how he goes.

“He definitely improves players. He wants to do everything he can to make his team play better.”

Chelsea are looking for defenders who have lost Antonio Rudiger to Real Madrid and Barcelona’s Andreas Christensen and could take advantage of De Ligt’s disastrous talks with Juventus by testing the club with a significant bid.

De Ligt played 117 games for Juve and scored eight times. He also won 37 caps for the Netherlands and is likely to be selected in Louis van Gaal’s squad for the World Cup in Qatar.

De Ligt won the competition in his first season with the club and saw the last two Scudetti move to Inter Milan and AC Milan, while Juventus have struggled in recent seasons to match their domestic dominance in 2010.
