Matthew Perry’s X account has been hacked by scammers attempting to conduct cryptocurrency fraud.
The account of the late Friends star, who died of a ketamine overdose at age 54 on October 28, 2023, posted fake links directing users to make contributions to his foundation, and the links redirected fans to a fraudulent site.
Perry’s account has 1.5 million followers, and the Matthew Perry Foundation issued a statement on Monday warning about the scam and revealing that they had regained control of his account.
His post read: ‘We have received reports that Matthew’s official X page has been hacked and directs users to a scam site soliciting donations via cryptocurrency.
‘Please do not donate to this site or share fraudulent posts on social media.

‘MatthewPerryFoundation.org is the only website associated with the foundation and we only accept donations through this site.’
An accompanying post said: ‘This is the only official account for the Matthew Perry X Foundation, and we will only post official Foundation communications from this account.
“Please report imposter accounts and do not send donations through any channel other than http://MatthewPerryFoundation.org.”
Close friends of the late star created the foundation in his name after his death, dedicated to helping those struggling with addiction.
Perry had spoken openly for years about his struggle with drug and alcohol addiction, estimating that his rehabilitation costs had amounted to $9 million.
Announcing the foundation, a statement from the organization said: ‘The Matthew Perry Foundation is the embodiment of Matthew’s long-standing commitment to helping others struggling with the disease of addiction.
“You will honor his legacy and be guided by his own words and experiences and driven by his passion to make a difference in as many lives as possible,” the statement announcing the foundation states.
The organization also cited a quote from Perry about their websitehoping to be remembered for helping others struggling with addiction.

The quote reads: “When I die, I don’t want ‘Friends’ to be the first thing mentioned; I want helping others to be the first thing mentioned.”
And I’m going to live the rest of my life proving it. Addiction is too powerful for anyone to overcome alone. But together, one day at a time, we can defeat it.”
Perry died from the “acute effects of ketamine” and drowning, his autopsy revealed, and the actor had similar amounts of ketamine in his system as a hospital patient under general anesthesia.
“The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the cause of death of actor Matthew Langford Perry, 54, was the acute effects of ketamine,” the Los Angeles Coroner’s Office said.
‘Contributing factors to Mr Perry’s death include drowning, coronary artery disease and the effects of buprenorphine (used to treat opioid use disorder). The manner of death is an accident.
Perry was found face down in the poolside hot tub of his Los Angeles home at 4:17 p.m. on October 28, shocking the entertainment world and breaking the hearts of fans around the world.
He had been receiving ketamine infusion therapy as a treatment for depression, the medical examiner reported, but the last session was a week and a half before his death, and the ketamine is only in his system for three or four hours, meaning that doesn’t lead directly to your death.

Perry published a memoir in 2022 titled ‘Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing’ in which he openly talked about his battles with addiction.
“With the high levels of ketamine found in their post-mortem blood samples, the main lethal effects would be produced by both cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression,” concluded medical examiner Raffi Djabourian.
Perry’s blood ketamine levels were 3,540 ng/ml in peripheral blood and 3,271 ng/ml in central blood.
For a patient under general anesthesia, in a hospital, a ketamine blood level of 1,000 to 6,000 ng/ml would be normal, the medical examiner explained.
‘Drowning contributes due to the likelihood of immersion in the pool since losing consciousness; Coronary artery disease contributes due to exacerbation of ketamine-induced myocardial effects on the heart.
“The effects of buphrenorphine are listed as contributing, although not at toxic levels, due to additive respiratory effects when present with high levels of ketamine.”
He did not have alcohol, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine or fentanyl in his system.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and the medical examiner performed an autopsy on October 29.
