Matthew McConaughey shared that there is an “initiation process” in Hollywood while discussing his 30-year acting career in a new interview.

The Interstellar star, 54, whose first leading role was opposite Sandra Bullock in the 1996 film A Time to Kill, opened up about her “ups and downs” over the years in a new interview with People.

‘I, like anyone, have had my ups and downs. My star meter has been higher, my star meter has been lower. I win Oscar awards“I’ve been arrested playing bongos naked.”

“Overall, I think there has been an inherent good will towards me, but that didn’t stop me from discovering my own initiation into the industry,” added the actor, who recently attended the Oscars with his wife Camila, 41.

‘Because there is an initiation process. There simply is. You can get tips, but you have to cut through the nonsense and separate the wheat from the chaff along the way.

He said that while it is possible to get “tips” from others in the industry, he believes it is important for aspiring actors to learn how things work for themselves.

“There are a lot of things that you learn 10 years into being in Hollywood and say, ‘Well, why didn’t they tell me that in my second year?’

But now, the ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ actor doesn’t even share what he’s learned with his younger self.

He said, ‘Oh, I wouldn’t tell you. I’d let him figure it out the same way I did. Remove secondary roads from the highway. Get confused, get frustrated, feel lost and get over it.’

In 2020, Matthew reflected on his tumultuous career in Hollywood, including his now infamous brush with the law in 1999.

The actor, who has reinvented himself in recent years by turning down roles in romantic comedies in favor of more dramatic work, published a candid memoir about his life, which examines his past indiscretions.

Matthew’s transformation from Hollywood bad boy to family man coincided with his shift from starring in fluffy romantic comedies to hard-hitting blockbusters, a move dubbed ‘McConaissance’.

In 1999, police knocked on his door in response to a neighbor’s noise complaint. They found him drugged and naked with a hookah nearby.

He resisted arrest and was taken to jail for resisting and possession of marijuana.

The charges were eventually dropped, but he had to pay a fifty-dollar fine for disturbing the peace, a mere drop in the ocean for the actor who was then earning $4 million per film.

Matthew’s acclaimed performance in Dallas Buyers Club led to his Oscar win in 2014, and he has continued to appear in dramatic roles such as True Detective and Interstellar.

Matthew has Levi, 15, Vida, 14, and Livingston, 11, with his wife Camila, whom he married in 2012, and believes fatherhood has made him a better actor.

He said: “I know that having children has made me a better artist and a better actor.” Children see things for the first time all the time.

‘Your questions are innocent. I’ve become a better storyteller because I have children.’

The Oscar-winning star took on his role as koala Buster Moon in ‘Sing’ and its sequel so his kids could enjoy his work for once, and it was a particularly special moment for him when the kids noticed his involvement.

He said, ‘Yeah, it was fun… And as they got older, they couldn’t see anything I did.

‘When you become a parent, you end up seeing mostly what your children see. And then I thought, “Man, I’ve never been a part of an animated film and I like doing voice work,” so I went and did that.

‘I remember sitting at the premiere of [‘Sing’] and they’re listening and saying, “Hey, that sounds like…” They had that moment where they look at the screen, look at the audio, look at me sitting next to them, do the math and say, ‘That’s you!’ That was really cool for them.”

“And that was something I did for them and for the child in all of us.”
