“Maybe there was a ‘meeting’!” Matthew McConaughey reveals Woody Harrelson may be his real brother after his mother arouses Mary’s suspicion with a cryptic remark
Matthew McConaughey has claimed that Woody Harrelson may be his real brother.
The 53-year-old actor revealed his suspicions that his mother Mary had a sexual encounter with Woody’s assassin father Charles, who died in prison in 2007.
His premonition was sparked when she made a cryptic comment about knowing the late convict during a joint family vacation with his former True Detective co-star, 61, and fellow Texas resident.
The comment prompted him to research his family history, but the couple – who happen to be reunited for the Apple TV+ comedy Brother From Another Mother – have yet to undergo a DNA test.
Matthew said on the Let’s talk off camera with Kelly Ripa podcast: ‘You know, where I start and where he ends, and where he begins and I end, has always been a dark line. And that’s part of our bromance, right?

“My kids call him Uncle Woody. His kids call me Uncle Matthew. And you see pictures of us and my family think a lot of pictures of him are me. His family thinks a lot of my pictures are him.’
“A few years ago we were in Greece talking about how close we are and our families. And my mother is there, and she says, “Woody, I knew your father.” Everyone knew about the ellipses my mother left after “knew.” It was a loaded KNEW.
“We proceeded to unpack what this ‘knew’ meant, and did some math and found that out [Woody’s] father was on leave at the same time my father and mother were getting divorced for the second time.
“Then there are possible receipts and places in West Texas where there might have been a meeting, or a meeting, or a ‘knew’ moment.”
While Woody’s father Charles died of a heart attack in his cell 16 years ago, the woman believed to be his mother, Diane Lou Oswald, is still alive.
Matthew, who lost his father James in 1992, wrote in his memoir Greenlights: ‘He had a heart attack when he came. [during intercourse].’
The Interstellar star added in the podcast: “Look, it’s a little easier for Woody to say, ‘Come on, let’s do [DNA tests]”Because what’s in it for him?”
“It’s a little bit more difficult for me because he’s asking me to take the chance to say, ‘Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me maybe my dad isn’t my dad after believing that for 53 years?’ I got a little more skin in the game.”
