Matt Payne and Chaz Mostert have grabbed a pole each in Melbourne after back-to-back sudden-death Supercars qualifying sessions.
Payne claimed two third places earlier in the week and flew 11 places to the top of the pack in the dying seconds to claim a career-first pole in Saturday’s first session at Albert Park.
The Grove Racing rookie hit the city circuit with a fresh set of tires and clocked a lap time of one minute 46.65 seconds to beat Friday’s pole sitter Cam Waters by 0.007 seconds.
Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Mostert was third fastest and will start the 14-lap race from the second row alongside Broc Feeney (Triple Eight), while championship leader and Feeney’s teammate Will Brown was forced to settle for sixth behind Jack Le Brocq.
Waters was left to rue the missed opportunity after failing to make the most of his top spot in race four.
A final gut effort from Chaz Mostert means he starts from pole position in race six
Matt Payne beat 11 places to claim pole position for race five at Albert Park on Sunday
As the Tickford Racing driver finished sixth on Friday, he had gotten the jump on Brown in their starting grid battle, forcing him to take an inside line. But Waters lost the lead before the first corner before surrendering a podium place after going too wide at a corner.
“I’m spewing that I missed it,” Waters said after the first qualifying session.
‘I’ve got my work cut out for me, haven’t I? I just want to do another nice, clean lap.’
Mostert beat Payne by 0.110 seconds in the second session to grab the best possible starting position for the final race of the weekend.
Like Payne, Mostert boasted a fresh set of tires to record a lap time of 1:46.322, denying the young New Zealander a career second pole and Waters a chance at the top grid spot.
Waters starts third, sharing the second row with Nick Percat, while Feeney and Brown missed the top five in sixth and ninth respectively.
Race five starts at 5.40pm (AEDT).
