Countryfile's Matt Baker, 46, revealed he had to make family decisions

Matt Baker has revealed he had to make some “tough” family decisions in the latest series of his hit show Matt Baker: Travels with Mum and Dad.

The 46-year-old presenter opened up about his family dynamic on his show, which sees him exploring the north of England with his parents, Janice and Mike.

In the first episode, the trio headed to the Northumberland County Show, the largest annual celebration of rural life in the North East of England, and watched as Matt’s mother entered her two dogs into a competition.

The former One Show presenter and his family have regularly appeared on shows together, having previously starred in Matt Baker’s Our Farm in the Dales.

In an interview with The Daily ExpressMatt expressed his excitement about working with his parents again and talked about some of the challenging decisions they had to make during filming.

Matt explained that the program focuses on shorter trips rather than traveling abroad or being away for long periods of time.

He said: “The key is that they (his parents) are always close to home because obviously if you have a farm you can’t go very far. And also, since the father is in his 80s, they would never think of planning an adventure.”

The TV show host hoped people would find his programme inspiring and that it might encourage families to seek out day trips that included all generations.

He said: ‘We’re not going abroad, and it’s actually something we can relate to and hopefully from my generation’s perspective I’m inspiring people to take their older family members out, have new experiences, have fun and just be together and experience things they wouldn’t really do themselves.’

Despite the success of Matt’s shows, the Countryfile presenter has not committed to another series.

He told the paper that the end of his latest series was “the natural end of a chapter.”

He explained that he had not planned to stop there, but felt it was the right time.

Elaborating further, he said: “That’s why we didn’t decide to stop filming it, it’s just the end of that process.”

The presenter explained that for his landmark shows, including Our Farm in the Dales, Matt had no intention of filming anything at all, explaining that he was struggling with a lot of big family decisions at the time and was upfront with producers and TV channels about his concerns.

The channel’s directors then asked if he would like to film his experience on the farm and Matt was delighted.

He was surprised that his show received so much praise and believed it was due to its realistic portrayal of farm life rather than showing viewers only the romantic side of things.

She added that she thought it was important for viewers to see the difficult family decisions being made, including her mother’s decision to change direction on the farm.

Matt went on to say that he had received thousands of letters from people praising the show and telling him that difficult family discussions are hard, whether they are about the realities of farming or not, and that they had found solace in his show.

Matt’s positive experience of filming contrasts with his time on Strictly Come Dancing.

The media personality recently revealed that her experience was much “more intense” than other celebrities who have appeared in the competition.

The TV presenter reached the final of the scandal-plagued BBC series in 2010 with Russian professional dancer Aliona Vilani, but came second.

Despite his success on the dance show, Matt admitted that he hasn’t kept in touch with anyone in his group.

Her confession comes after Aliona admitted to forcing Matt to dance while sick during her time on the show.

While attending rehearsals and appearing on the live show every weekend, Matt juggled The One Show and Countryfile at the same time.

He admitted that his participation in the program came at a “busy time” for him, which made his experience “more intense.”

Matt told the Metro: “I don’t think anyone in the history of Strictly has had a more intense experience than me when you look at all the work I was doing at the same time.”

During their experience, it was reported at the time that during a rehearsal for their Viennese Waltz, Aliona spun Matt around so much that he suffered nausea and dizziness.
