Matildas fans decided to rub salt in the wounds of the women’s rugby sevens team after their spectacular collapse in Paris.
Australia were dealt a double shock at the Stade de France on Tuesday when defeats to Canada and the United States denied them the chance of leaving Paris with an Olympic medal.
It was a blow for the women’s team, who had hoped to reach at least the final of the competition after crushing their rivals before the semi-final against Canada.
Maddison Levi and her teammates were heartbroken at the end of both games, breaking down in tears in heartbreaking scenes for their families and fans watching at home.
But some Matildas fans chose not to express their sympathy towards the rugby team, after veteran player Charlotte Caslick sparked a war of words between the two teams before the Olympics began.
Caslick expressed his annoyance at the increased attention paid to the football team, despite it having far less praise than the rugby team.
“I don’t know if they (Matildas) will get out of the group stage,” she told News Corp.
‘We (Sevens Rugby) have been at the top of our game for years and years, always up there… with podium finishes in all our series. And we probably don’t get the recognition (we deserve).

But the rugby team failed to win a medal despite being the big favourite for gold.

“I think if we can perform at the Paris Olympics we can show Australia what a fantastic team they are. There are some superstars who deserve praise that others (Matildas) do not get.”
Early Wednesday morning, a fan asked Caslick on Twitter: “How’s that podium thing going, babe?”
“At least the Matildas play the full version of their sport.”
However, Tony Gustavsson’s side may have to return home early from Paris as the Matildas will have to fight hard to qualify for the knockout stages.
They were thrashed 3-0 in their opening game against Germany before overcoming Zambia in a dramatic 6-5 victory on Sunday.
The Matildas need a positive result against group leaders Team USA to have a chance of advancing.
