The BBC has remained coy about Gary Lineker’s future as MOTD presenter with Mail Sport, previously revealing a leaked email suggesting he was set to leave after Saturday’s show.

Lineker is under contract with the organization through the end of the season and is then expected to end his association with the organization.

The 63-year-old will have no shortage of options if his iconic MOTD reign ends and could follow in the footsteps of one of the show’s former hosts.

Former MOTD presenter Ray Stubbs makes a stunning return to television as he hosts coverage of the World Seniors Matchplay on TNT Sports.

Stubbs was previously one of the BBC’s most popular sports presenters during a period between 1993 and 2009 in which he covered MOTD, as well as presenting iconic shows Grandstand and Sportsnight.

The 68-year-old also previously worked covering the 1994 and 1998 World Cups, as well as presenting Euro 96.

He later moved to ESPN in 2009 but is now back on UK screens specializing in darts and snooker presentations.

Stubbs presented the 2023 World Seniors Snooker Championships on Channel 5 last year and will provide coverage throughout the World Seniors Matchplay which was due to feature darts legend Phil Taylor.

However, Taylor had to withdraw late from the competition citing pain caused by recent hip replacement surgery.

“Following a hip replacement operation, I have been experiencing pain in recent weeks and have been advised against playing this weekend by consultants.”
