There are no tsunami warnings for the Australian mainland.

Located 1,600 km southeast of Tasmania, Macquarie Island is home to the Australian Antarctic Division station, which is busy year-round.

It has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 and is a haven for large colonies of penguins and seals.

The island is particularly active in terms of seismic activity, since it is located on the boundary between the Australian plate and the Pacific plate.

The island had a magnitude 8.2 earthquake in 1989, the largest intra-oceanic earthquake of the 20th century, and also recorded a magnitude 8.1 earthquake in 2004.

In December of last year, an earthquake of magnitude 6.6 was recorded on the island.

The Australian Federal Department of Agriculture, Water and Environment is currently studying the modernization of the Antarctic research station on the island.

The station is located in a low part of the land that connects two parts of the island.

While the government wants to renovate the existing site, researchers have raised concerns about the risk of a tsunami.

More to follow.
