At least fifty-three people have been killed in a massacre in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, local officials have confirmed.

The men were shot dead in an ambush in Enga province, in the remote mountainous region of the South Pacific island nation, ABC reported.

The massacre was a major escalation of ongoing tribal violence in the region.

Images had emerged of bodies being loaded onto a police truck, ABC reported.

It is not clear from the report when the massacre took place.
