Erik ten Hag urged Manchester United fans to keep faith in Marcus Rashford flop

Erik ten Hag has called on Manchester United fans to support Marcus Rashford and help him get back to last season’s level.

Rashford took to social media in the early hours of Friday morning to denounce what he believes has been months of “abuse” directed at him.

Responding to a Man United fan account, he posted: ‘I appreciate your support! He is abusive and has been for months. Enough is enough.’

Asked about the criticism directed at Rashford, who was booed by United fans in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final over Coventry City, he wants a united front to help Rashford turn around his dismal season.

“I have a lot of sympathy for Rashy, of course,” Ten Hag said.

Rashford thanked fans online for their support before claiming he had “had enough”.

“Last year he had a brilliant season, the best season of his career, scoring 30 goals, so you see what he is capable of.

‘This season has not given the performances and people are very critical. I think we have to support it.

“Everyone should get behind him and push him to get back to the levels he had last year.”

Rashford is not the only one to have been criticized for poor performances by his supporters, with Antony being booed on Wednesday night before retiring early against Burnley.

But pressed on Rashford, who has only scored eight goals for United this season, Ten Hag unwaveringly backs his winger.

“I think he needs support,” he continued.

“We all know what he is capable of, we all have to support him and push him. He can do better than this year. We saw it last year when he was really brilliant.”

And he added: “I think the fans always support us.”

Only Mason Mount returns to the Manchester United squad for the weekend visit to Burnley, and Ten Hag is optimistic that Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martínez and Anthony Martial can feature before the season ends.
