Friends of Mary Max, the wife of celebrated artist Peter Max, said that she tried to kill herself years ago before she managed to take her own life in her apartment on the Upper West Side in Manhattan during the weekend.

The 52-year-old was found dead in the 15th floor apartment of the couple on Riverside Drive near West 84th Street on Sunday night, according to police.

Her death comes in the midst of a bitter legal battle with other members of the Max family over the artwork of her 81-year-old husband and his declining health.

Peter, her husband of more than 20 years, suffers from an advanced form of dementia, which was described in a New York Times profile in May.

A reportedly source Page six that the profile, in which also Mary & # 39; s courtroom struggled with Peter & # 39; s children, had influenced her and said: & # 39; She was not happy with it. & # 39;

Mary, who was found dead in the apartment by a friend, died of nitrogen poisoning.

Mary was embroiled in a constant argument with her stepson Adam Max since he accused her in 2015 after she had accused her of attempting to kill his father so that she could take control of his multi-million dollar art collection.

In turn, Maria accused her stepson of stealing $ 4.3 million in works of art that her husband had given her in marital conditions.

The mental condition of the artist has deteriorated considerably in recent years because the legal battles between his family have continued in court.

Mary asked a court four years ago to appoint a guard to oversee her husband's company after Adam and three business partners took over the artist's studio.

They increased production and profit through a series of art auctions on cruise ships.

But sources told it New York Times that Peter was too sick and hadn't painted seriously for about four years.

They claimed that Peter just drew his name for other work by artists that pursued the colorful and psychedelic style that made him such a hit with hippies in the 1960s and 1970s.

After the court granted Mary & # 39; s request for a guardian, Adam removed his father from his home and moved him through New York for more than a month.

In a series of destructive allegations, Mary accused Adam of hiding Peter's whereabouts and effectively kidnapping him & # 39 ;.

Adam replied that he protected his father from Mary's verbal and physical abuse, and described her as negligent.

That view, which was later supported by the guardian Mary, established itself.

Members of the domestic staff also accused Maria of neglecting her husband by saying she had withheld food and even & # 39; large Brazil nuts & # 39; had put in his smoothies that could serve as a choking hazard.

In a transcript of a recorded interview in court, Mary discussed with her driver about renting a goon to intimidate her husband and damage his painting hand.

However, a lawyer appointed by the court claimed that Peter declared his love for his wife several times and that removing him from his home could be detrimental to his well-being.

A judge ordered Peter to return to his wife's care in their Riverside Drive home and that a guardian oversees both his business and personal affairs.

Peter & # 39; s daughter Libra, who lives in Los Angeles, took over her father's studio in January and filed a lawsuit to prevent her brother from coming into contact with the company.

Mary was the second wife of the famous artist.

He married Elizabeth Nance in 1963 and the two had two children, Adam Cosmo and Libra Astro, before they divorced in 1976.

He continued to have a series of lofty relationships before meeting Mary Balkin on a sidewalk in Manhattan in 1996.

Mary, a blonde with a pixel cut, caught Peter & # 39; s eye. He approached her and introduced himself with the words: & # 39; I have been painting your profile all my life. & # 39;

They married a year later and the wedding was led by Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani.

Peter's artwork – known for his colorful and psychedelic style – made him a counterculture icon.

At the height of his popularity, he created art for the Super Bowl, the World Cup, the American Open and the White House law.

His works could be seen on everything from sheets to breakfast boxes, to stamps and a piece of Berlin wall.

Peter later expanded his collaboration with Park West Gallery and it became a name known to everyone on vacation at a major cruise company, including Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and Carnival.

Cruise ship auctions generate the majority of Park West Gallery's revenue and a & # 39; Peter Max original & # 39; is their largest sale for customers willing to pay up to $ 30,000 for one.

His name has become so intertwined with cruise ships – which can save as much as 40 percent on Park West sales – that Norwegian even has a full Peter Max-themed ship.

The ship's hull is decorated with his Statue of Liberty.
