Actress Martha Cope joins EastEnders as Dotty Cotton’s mother, arriving in Albert Square this fall

Renowned television actress Martha Cope has been cast in EastEnders as Sandy Gibson, the mother of Dotty Cotton (played by Milly Zero), and will make her first screen appearance this fall.

Martha, 51, has appeared on many popular TV shows, including Doctors, Men Behaving Badly, Family Affairs, Doctor Who and Holby City.

Martha’s character Sandy has a hard life that she can’t seem to escape. Her past alcohol problems led Sandy to have a volatile relationship with the infamous Nick Cotton (John Altman) in which she became pregnant with Dotty, but she originally kept her pregnancy a secret.

She eventually told Nick about their daughter while he was in prison and he took over custody after his release, lying to Dotty that Sandy had died in a car accident.

Sandy was last seen in the square in 2010 when Dot (June Brown) played a key role in reuniting mother and daughter against her son’s will.

Sandy appeared in just two episodes at the time and was played by actress Caroline Pegg.

Since Dotty returned to Walford in 2019, Sandy has stayed far away and no one is more shocked than Dotty when her mother drops by unannounced and soon causes chaos.

Speaking of her arrival at Albert Square, Martha said: “I’ve been watching EastEnders since it started and I’m beyond excited to be part of such an iconic show.”

She also noted that she “has a lot of fun playing Sandy.”

Jon Sen, Executive Producer, EastEnders added: ‘Martha is a brilliant addition to our cast – we are delighted to welcome her to Walford.

“To say Sandy has a checkered past is an understatement and it’s no secret that Dotty’s upbringing was marred by her parents.”

He concluded, “Sandy’s arrival will overwhelm Dotty and she will be forced to face everything she’s tried to leave behind.”
