Marseille are “exploring a deal to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United”.

The striker, who spent last season on loan at Getafe, had been attracting interest from Lazio and a number of other clubs after United set their price for him at £40m.

But now the Ligue 1 side, under former Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi, have emerged as the favourites, according to the Athletic.

They report that Greenwood and Marseille have engaged in positive conversations and that he favors them at this stage.

Mail Sport revealed last week that United had opened negotiations with Lazio, who were also interested in signing Greenwood last summer and that they are also still in the fight for his signature.

Juventus, Napoli and clubs from Germany and Spain have also shown interest in Greenwood, who scored 10 goals in 36 games for Getafe last season.

Man United decided the 22-year-old striker had no future at Old Trafford despite the Crown Prosecution Service dropping attempted rape and assault charges against him last year.

The club wants a permanent sale but could still accept a loan structure with an obligation to buy the 22-year-old.

The final sum is likely to be a fee of £30m which will rise to around £40m with add-ons, as reported by Mail Sport’s Chris Wheeler and Sami Mokbel.

Marseille finished eighth in Ligue 1 last season and had three managers during a turbulent campaign.

De Zerbi is in charge of leading the team into next season and could be considered a coup if Greenwood is convinced to join.
