Married Texas mayor, 42, resigns after being arrested for trying to lure 14-year-old girl into online sex

A Texas mayor accused of seducing a 14-year-old girl for sex has resigned.

Matthew McIlravy, 42, who has been mayor of Pilot Point, Texas since May, resigned before a city council meeting last Thursday.

He is accused of trying to meet up and have sex with a girl he thought was 13 according to an arrest warrant.

“To the City Council and the City Manager of Pilot Point, I resign as Mayor of Pilot Point with immediate effect,” wrote McIlravy in his letter of resignation, WFAA reported:

McIlravy, a married father of two sons, was charged last week with soliciting a minor under 14, according to Dallas Morning News.

He was admitted to a Dallas County jail on Tuesday on a second-degree felony charge before being released on bail.

McIlravy was arrested after a five-month undercover operation by the Internet Crimes Against Children Unit of the Dallas Police Department.

The effort involved multiple agencies, including the US Marshals Task Force, Homeland Security Investigations, the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Collin County District Attorney’s Office.

Investigators said he also had “additional communications with minors” who have not yet been identified and the investigation is ongoing. It is unclear whether McIlravy has been given a lawyer.

McIlravy was elected mayor of the city of Denton County, which has a population of approximately 4,000, in May. After stepping down, Pro Tem Mayor Chad Major announced that he would assume the responsibilities of Mayor according to: KDFW TV

Major also declined to address McIlravy’s arrest at the meeting, saying it was “not the place to file complaints against officials or personnel, and complaints had to be made in writing to the city manager.”
