Married Oregon man Michael Wolfe, 52, has been charged with murder and kidnapping after his former mistress and their three-year-old son went missing

A married man from Oregon has been charged with murder and kidnapping after his former mistress and their three-year-old son went missing.

Michael Wolfe, 52, has been charged with two counts of aggravated murder and two counts of kidnapping in the disappearance of Karissa Fretwell, 25, and their son William.

Salem police said investigators and law enforcement partners are still looking for Fretwell and William, who were last seen on May 13.

Lt Treven Upkes said the police, who arrested Wolfe in a donut store in Portland on Friday, have enough evidence & # 39; currently & # 39; to have Wolfe killed.

& # 39; We are working on the worst-case scenario and hope for the best & # 39 ;, he said. & # 39; We continue to hope for the safe return of Karissa and William. & # 39;

Upkes would not reveal why Wolfe was a suspect in the case, but it was recently discovered that Wolfe and Fretwell were in the middle of a custody battle.

Megan Harper, Fretwell & # 39; s friend, said that Wolfe and Fretwell had an affair when they both worked in a steel mill in McMinville years ago.

& # 39; There was never a relationship, & # 39; said Harper KATU. & # 39; She never knew he was married until after a few weeks that she was pregnant. Then he offered to pay for an abortion. & # 39;

But Harper said that Wolfe later wanted full custody of William.

& # 39; That was her fear, he took her child & # 39 ;, she added. & # 39; My first thought when she went missing was that he had done something. & # 39;

Several friends of Fretwell said that Wolfe started sending her disturbing messages.

& # 39; There were all these warning signs, & # 39; said Harper. & # 39; He would send her creepy things by mail. & # 39;

Harper said she should look at William on May 17, but had never heard of her boyfriend. They had spoken recently days ago, on May 11, when Fretwell asked Harper about installing a security camera system called the Ring.

Fretwell and her son were reported missing by family on May 17 after she did not show up for work. Their last known location was West Salem.

Wolfe was called a person of interest on Thursday and the police said they were looking for two of his rural properties, including a 10-hectare estate in Gaston.

Authorities say diving teams are also being used to help find water bodies in Yamhill County.

Randy Ruggles, Wolfe's neighbor, said the suspect had lived there with his family for the past eight years. He said he hasn't seen Wolfe in months.

& # 39; This was a big shock to us & # 39 ;, Ruggles told the Statesman Journal. & # 39; It's just scary. & # 39;

According to Ruggles, FBI officials and Salem agents have been at Wolfe's house since Sunday.

Wolfe is currently being held without bail in Yamhill County prison and is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.

It remains unclear whether his wife or family members have been interviewed by the police and whether they are part of the investigation.

Authorities said the final charge against Wolfe will be determined by the Office of the District of Attorney or Yamhill County.

Fretwell is described as 5ft 9in, 135 pounds, with blue eyes and blond hair that turns her red. William is described as 3ft, 30 pounds, with blue eyes and blond hair.

& # 39; I hope by a miracle that they are just locked up somewhere and that they find her, & # 39; said Harper.

& # 39; And I can say, "We have not given up hope, we have not looked for you," and have a good end to the story.

Anyone with information about this case should call the Tips hotline of the Salem police at 503-588-8477.
