- Mark Wood suffered the injury late on the third day of England’s first Test match.
- The 34-year-old was unable to participate further in the match.
- His injury will leave the door open for a call-up to Nottinghamshire’s Olly Stone.
England fast bowler Mark Wood has been ruled out of the remainder of the Test series against Sri Lanka due to injury, opening the door for a recall for Olly Stone.
Wood, 34, suffered the injury late on the third day of his side’s five-wicket win at Old Trafford and was unable to take part in the match. Subsequent scans confirmed Wood had suffered a muscle strain in his right thigh.
Stone looks the man most likely to replace Wood for the final two matches of the series, which resumes on Thursday with the second Test at Lord’s.
The Nottinghamshire bowler’s career, like Wood’s, has been blighted by injuries but Stone is highly rated in England for his ability to consistently bowl over 90mph.
Stone has taken 10 wickets at an average of 19.4 in his three Tests for England, the last of which came against New Zealand at Edgbaston in 2021.
England fast bowler Mark Wood has been ruled out of the remainder of this summer’s Test series against Sri Lanka.
The 34-year-old suffered a leg muscle strain during England’s opening Test at Old Trafford.
His absence has left the door open for Nottinghamshire and London Spirit bowler Olly Stone.
Meanwhile, Leicestershire left-hander Josh Hull has received his first Test call-up to replace Wood in the squad for the remainder of the series.
The 20-year-old, 1.98m tall Hull helped the Foxes to One Day Cup glory last year and took five wickets on his England Lions debut against Sri Lanka earlier this month.
