Rep. Firebrand Marjorie Taylor Greene is a “racist,” a black Democratic member who was attacked by the accused Georgia Republican.
The blow comes after a particularly testy House meeting Thursday night, as lawmakers were rumored to have been drinking before and during the long session.
Greene ridiculed Texas Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s appearance during the hearing to charge Attorney General Merrick Garland with contempt of Congress.
“I don’t think you know what we’re here for,” Greene said at the hearing before focusing her gaze on Crocketts’ appearance. “I think your false eyelashes are ruining what you’re reading.”
“She’s racist,” Crockett responded about Greene on Friday morning. “It’s them attacking me, actually as a black woman and all they’re trying to do is be racist. That’s all. That’s all, it’s racism.’
Crockett even suggested that Greene’s racism is “absolutely” indicative of where the Republican Party stands and that Greene could raise money with her attacks on her appearance.
“It will probably raise money because racists will be happy to give it to them.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., ridiculed her black Democratic colleague’s appearance at a late-night hearing Thursday.
Crockett said Greene has never criticized the appearance of any of her colleagues, such as Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., who was also at the chaotic hearing.
“Boebert has hair clippings,” Crockett said. And Boebert wears eyelashes sometimes, too. It seems that I don’t know. But she doesn’t attack her.
During the hearing, Crockett responded to Greene by asking the committee chair if personal attacks such as “if anyone on this committee starts talking about someone’s poorly shaped, blonde, male body” would be against the rules.
Asked Friday if personal attacks are fair game after the Georgia Republican ridiculed his appearance, Crockett said, “I don’t think they were ever on the table.”
“I think we have someone who is unfit for Congress who is currently in office who is not playing by the rules,” the Democrat said of Greene.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive member of the ‘Squad,’ who also had a dispute with Greene during the hearing, said Friday morning that Greene’s attack appeared to be racially motivated.
“It is not lost on me that Ms. Greene attacked one of the only black women on the committee for some of the most egregious and disgusting comments and with the expectation that she would be ignored,” AOC said.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, responded to Greene by asking the committee chair if personal attacks such as “if someone on this committee starts talking about someone’s poorly-built, blonde, male body” would be against the rules. .
Crockett, a former attorney, has represented the district that covers southern Dallas since 2023.
The fight broke out Thursday night when the House Oversight Committee voted to hold Attorney General Merrick Garland in contempt of Congress for refusing to comply with a subpoena.
But the hearing quickly got out of control, with representatives shooting at each other and yelling at each other.
Greene asked if ‘any of the Democrats on this committee are employing Judge Merchan’s daughter.’
He was referring to Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., who retained the services of a political consulting firm that employs the daughter of Judge Juan Merchan, who is presiding over Trump’s criminal trial in New York.
Crockett responded to Greene: “Please tell me what that has to do with Merrick Garland.”
Greene then said, “I don’t think you know what you’re here for…I think your false eyelashes are ruining what you’re reading.”
She was then interrupted by Chairman James Comer, R-Kentucky, calling for order.
He said the minor personal attacks during the hearing “were not appropriate.”
“I kept reminding everyone of the decorum and we are going to comply with the decorum of the committee and unfortunately there were some who were not,” the lawmaker told DailyMail.com on Friday morning.
Both Crockett and AOC said Comer allowed the exchange to continue for too long before excusing the committee to take a recess so members could regain their composure.
Greene also got into a verbal fight with AOC during the hearing, prompting the New York Democrat to tell the Georgia Republican, “Oh girl, baby, girl… don’t even play.”
Comer has said he couldn’t keep up with the members’ insults because he has two headphones and couldn’t discern what Greene, Crockett and AOC were saying at the time.
There were also accusations that some members were drinking alcohol before or during the evening hearing.
“It was brought up by Miss Stansbury, the distinguished lady from New Mexico, who said there were members drinking in the hearing room,” said the committee’s top Democrat, Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland.
Although the several members DailyMail.com spoke to who were at the hearing were unable to confirm or deny the allegations of alcohol consumption.
“It certainly had much more of the atmosphere of a bar fight than a proper hearing or review session of the United States House of Representatives,” Raskin added.
