Meanwhile, Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Wis., called Rep. Matt Gaetz “chubby” on the House floor after saying Gaetz called him “crushing.”
It came as President Mike Johnson met with hardline conservatives who want to oust him from office over his planned $95 billion foreign aid package with bills to fund Ukraine, Israel and the Indo-Pacific. present in the House of Representatives.
Another Greene amendment would require anyone who votes to fund the war in Ukraine to enlist in the Ukrainian military.
An amendment introduced by Rep. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., would designate Greene as “Vladimir Putin’s special envoy to the United States and another would rename Greene’s office ‘Neville Chamberlain Room,'” a reference to the former prime minister. An eviction motion has loomed over Johnson’s head since Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene launched the attempt to unseat him last month. The Georgia Republican is a staunch opponent of aid to Ukraine and has already threatened to try to fire Johnson if he brings him to the floor.
With the slim Republican majority, Johnson can only afford to lose three Republicans and keep his job.
The package in total would offer $26 billion to Israel, $60 billion to Ukraine and $8 billion to the Indo-Pacific, a mix of military and humanitarian aid. It is made up of four separate bills, one for each region.
Israel’s security bill will offer $4 billion to replenish Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system and billions more for weapons, artillery and ammunition systems, as well as an additional $2.4 billion for U.S. operations in the region.
Nine billion dollars of that bill goes toward humanitarian aid for Palestinians in Gaza.
“Some of my colleagues want the Speaker of the House to have a magic wand,” Johnson said on Fox News after releasing the text of the bills and as some of his colleagues threatened to impeach him over them.
He seemed resigned to the new motion to quash the threats. “If Marjorie makes the motion, she makes it and lets the chips fall where they may.”
