The Seattle Mariners placed Julio Rodriguez on the 10-day injury list due to a high ankle sprain he suffered when he crashed into the outfield wall at T-Mobile Park during Sunday’s win over the Houston Astros.
Rodriguez tracked a ball hit to center field by Yordan Alvarez, but crashed into the wall and dropped the ball. Once it hit the ground, the two-time American League All-Star and 2022 American League Rookie of the Year grabbed his right ankle in pain.
Mariners manager Scott Servais said X-rays on Rodriguez’s ankle were negative.
“Julio is doing well,” Servais said on Monday. “We’ll keep our fingers crossed that he won’t get a very serious injury and hope he’s not out for too long.”
This is the third time Rodriguez, who is hitting .263 with 11 homers and 37 RBIs, has landed on the injured list in his MLB career.
Rodriguez isn’t the only Mariners player to go on the injured list. Shortstop JP Crawford suffered a hairline fracture in his right pinky when he was hit by a pitch Monday.
“Adversity hits us at different times and we’re looking at it right now,” Servais said. “We’ll find out a lot about our club and the players that step up. JP was out at the beginning of the season for a while. We had players that step up and that’s what we’re going to need them to do now.”
France designated for assignment
First baseman Ty France was designated for assignment Tuesday after the Mariners placed him on outright waivers.
France, an American League All-Star in 2022, was in the midst of the worst slump of his career. The 30-year-old was hitting .224/.313/.351 in 87 games with eight homers and 31 RBIs. He spent parts of five seasons in Seattle and is the franchise’s all-time leader in hit by pitches, with 95, having passed Hall of Famer Edgar Martinez (89) in that category earlier this season.
