Central Coast Mariners star forward Angel Torres will be banned from playing in the Men’s A-League after being accused of sexual assault.
Torres, 24, was arrested at a Terrigal property on Monday in connection with an alleged sexual assault of a woman on March 24.
“He was taken to Gosford police station where he was charged with two counts of common assault, intimidation and aggravated sexual intercourse without consent,” New South Wales Police said in a statement on Tuesday.
Torres has been granted bail and will appear in court in Gosford on May 6.
The Colombian joined the Mariners at the start of the A-League Men’s season and has scored 13 goals in 23 games.
“Given the alleged serious offenses Torres has been charged with, Football Australia immediately imposed a no-fault suspension,” the Mariners said in a statement on Tuesday.
“The suspension is a precautionary measure that suspends the player from participating in activities related to football and the club.
“It is important to note that Football Australia, in imposing this provisional suspension, is not making a finding of guilt in respect of the offenses of which Torres has been charged.
“Those charges remain matters to be determined by the courts of New South Wales.”
