Mariah had a notoriously strained relationship with her mother and sister over the years, and was estranged from Alison, a recovering drug addict, for three decades before her death.
Patricia was married to Mariah’s father, Afro-Venezuelan Alfred Roy Carey, until she was three. Mariah’s father died at the age of 72 in 2002.
Her parents’ interracial marriage upset her maternal family and they later divorced.
In addition to substance abuse, Alison suffered from homelessness throughout her life. She was also HIV positive.
Dave Baker, Alison’s close friend and carer, said she had been struggling with her health in recent weeks.
They said The US Sun: ‘Alison was receiving palliative care at home for the last three weeks of her life.
He added that he had a problem with his internal organs before continuing: ‘I have known her for nine years and as her friend and, in recent months, her caregiver, I will miss her greatly.
“Goodbye, Alison. May you now find peace and may your tortured soul be forever free from earthly pain.”
In 2016, Alison made an impassioned plea to her famous sister on DailyMail.com, begging her to mend the rift between them and help save her life, saying: “Mariah, I love you, I desperately need your help.”
She was in urgent need of financial support as she battled to regain her health following a devastating attack on her home that left her brain damaged and seriously ill. She had been in and out of hospital.
In addition to Mariah and Alison, Patricia and Roy also had a son, Morgan, who is now 64 years old.
Patricia, educated at Juilliard, was an opera singer and vocal teacher.
Mariah opened up about her complicated relationships with her mother and sister in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning Of Mariah Carey.
“Like many aspects of my life, my relationship with my mother has been full of contradictions and conflicting realities. It’s never been black and white, it’s been a rainbow of emotions,” she explained.

She said their relationship was “a thorny rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment.”
The book was also dedicated to Patricia: “And to Pat, my mother, who, despite everything, I believe did the best she could,” the singer wrote in the dedication.
‘I will love you the best I can, always.’
In 2009, the pop star told CBS Sunday Morning that her mother was the first person who inspired her.
“My mother was definitely the first person who inspired me. She was an opera singer and still sings,” he said at the time.
When journalist Troy Roberts asked him how he became aware of his musical talent, he replied: “Well, my mother tells a story. She said she was doing Rigoletto and she kept rehearsing a part over and over again.
“And then he messed up. And I said, ‘No, that’s it,’ and I sang it to him.”
Four years ago, Mariah reflected on how she was raised by Patricia, writing in her book that their attachment “has caused me much pain and confusion.”
She explained: ‘For my sanity and peace of mind, my therapist encouraged me to literally change my name and rethink my family.
“My mother became Pat to me, Morgan became my ex-brother, and Alison became my ex-sister. I had to stop hoping that one day, miraculously, they would become the mom, big brother, and big sister I fantasized about.”
In 2020, Mariah alleged that Alison, whom she described as “troubled and traumatized… tried to sell her to a pimp.”
In one passage of her book, Carey said of her sister Allison: ‘When I was 12, my sister drugged me with valium, offered me a pinky nail full of cocaine, gave me third-degree burns and tried to sell me to a pimp.’
