During the interview, which was conducted via a video stream, Waleed asked the hitmaker about the inspiration behind her famous Christmas song, All I Want for Christmas Is You.

The pop star admitted there was a sad core to the perky song, as the themes date back to her unhappy childhood.

“I grew up without great Christmases, I grew up longing for that thing you see on TV – everything is happy, it snows and everything is beautiful, but I had a dysfunctional family and a lot of problems with myself,” she admitted .

“After writing All I Want For Christmas is You, very early in my career, I started every year to create what I wanted to do for the holidays,” she continued.

“I feel like I grew up with it too, which a lot of people have, so I listened to it and picked it up and thought, ‘Oh yeah, it’s pretty good’ because nothing comes close to the classic Christmas songs that I grew up on, but I have to remember that a lot of people grew up with these.’

‘I should be grateful for it. It comes from a real place, a place of desire and it’s quite festive,” Mariah concluded.

Mariah’s uptempo R&B-tinged song has become a hallmark of the holiday season, earning Carey the title Queen of Christmas.

The star’s All I Want For Christmas song last year became the first Christmas song to top both the US-based Hot 100 and the official UK Singles chart.

The hit, which was first released on the singer’s 1994 Merry Christmas album, officially topped the UK charts last December, and Billboard announced that the track had returned to the top of the US charts.

All I Want For Christmas Is You also broke another hit record – no other song spent more weeks in the top 40 before finally reaching number one.
