For Wimbledon semi-finalist Tatjana Maria, the WTA tournament in Stuttgart is over after the round of 16.
The 35-year-old lost to the favored Frenchwoman Carolina Garcia (No. 4) 6: 7 (5: 7), 4: 6 in the clay court tournament on Thursday. After 1:40 hours, the US Open semi-finalist converted her first match point.
In the first set Maria gave away the chance to lead despite a break to 6:5. Then there was the world rankings-71. against Garcia after the 2-0 three serves in a row.
Maria, who had received a wildcard for the tournament, lost only the second duel with Garcia after 2015 in Birmingham.
In Stuttgart on Tuesday she prevailed in a hard-fought opening match against the Swiss qualifier Ylena In-Albon. Most recently, Maria won her third WTA title at the tournament in Bogotá.
Hopeful Jule Niemeier was already eliminated on Wednesday. The 23-year-old lost in round one to Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. For qualifier Tamara Korpatsch it was already over on Monday.
