Wimbledon semi-finalist Tatjana Maria and qualifier Laura Siegemund have reached the second round of the WTA tournament in Madrid.
Maria, who was eliminated in the round of 16 at the home game in Stuttgart last week, defeated Alexandra Eala (Philippines), who was 201 places down in the world rankings, in 70 minutes 6:1, 6:1. Siegemund prevailed against the Argentinian Nadia Podoroska 3: 6, 6: 3, 6: 3.
In the second round, Maria, who already celebrated a tournament victory on clay in Bogota at the beginning of April, will face the American Bernarda Pera. Siegemund meets the Croatian Petra Martic, seeded at number 27. Jule Niemeier (Dortmund) had already cleared her opening hurdle on Tuesday.
