Maren Morris shared the terrifying response she received after speaking out against Morgan Wallen’s use of a racial slur in a video obtained by TMZ in 2021.
The 34-year-old country singer said her four-year-old son Hayes, whom she shares with ex-husband Ryan Hurd, received death threats for calling Wallen, 31, at the time.
While speaking on the Sophia Bush show Work in progress In a podcast, the singer described the situation as “terrifying.”
“It wasn’t just death threats against me, it was death threats against my son. So it was like, ‘Wow, now we’re involving the kids,'” she said in the episode.
“As a young mother, it was obviously scary,” she reflected on Sophia’s show.

In 2021, Maren spoke out against sexism and racism within the entertainment scene.
She stressed that female artists would likely be “abandoned, lose sponsorships (and become) social pariahs of music controversy” if they were in Morgan’s position.
“We keep (white men) rich and protected at all costs and without any remorse,” he wrote on Twitter.
The star explained: “It actually IS representative of (Nashville) because this isn’t his first ‘fight’ and he just broke a huge streaming record last month anyway,” he said of Wallen.
“We all know that this was not the first time he used that word,” he added.
Despite the backlash she faced for her comments, the Background Music hitmaker said she would do it again.
In the new episode of the podcast, she said: “I feel exactly the same as I did that day.”
However, he did point out what he would do differently: “Would I use Twitter channels again? Probably not. There are probably more dignified ways to get my point across, but hey, it is what it is.”
Wallen, pictured in November 2023, has a reputation as country music’s most controversial star.

She continued: ‘Don’t be racist. Don’t be transphobic. Don’t be homophobic. I still stand by that, so if you expect me to feel bad, I won’t.’
‘In fact, the only thing that made me feel bad was realizing that even in this music community here in Nashville (and I still live here) it’s like, ‘Oh, wow, who would stand up for you if you were people of color? (but) who would stand up for them?”
Elsewhere in her chat with the One Tree Hill alum, Morris opened up about her decision to come out as bisexual in June.
“It was something I always knew about myself,” he revealed.
“From the age of eight until now, I sometimes find it very difficult to delimit my sexual attraction or simply my love for women,” he told the actress.
She was inspired to share this fact about herself ahead of her musical collaboration with MUNA, a queer song called Push Me Over.
“I hate confusion and I felt like I wanted to celebrate it,” she explained about how people might react to new music if they didn’t know her perspective.
Elsewhere in her chat with the One Tree Hill alum, Morris opened up about her decision to come out as bisexual in June.
“I just wanted to get it all out there. I think those are things that should be front and center for me,” she said. “Everyone does what they want, but I was like, ‘My life is so open now that I’m not hiding any part of myself.'”
Explaining the informal approach she took, she said: “I also loved not doing a stupid press release or anything. I was like, ‘I’m just going to put it in an Instagram caption, like a tour photo.'”
“I liked to keep it lighthearted because it’s not something that, for me, requires a speech or a whole article.”
